Garter Snake

Garter Snakes website

Garter snakes live in the woods, in rocky areas and along streams. They eat earthworms, frogs, toads, salamanders and fish. You can find them in parks, in vacant lots or even in your backyard! Garter snakes are harmless. Some people have garter snakes as pets. In the winter, they hibernate with other snakes to stay warm. Their enemies include birds, opossums and cats. Garter snakes roam about in the daytime looking for food. They don't mind cold weather and stay active for longer during the year than other snakes do. Baby garter snakes do not hatch out of eggs like other snakes do. They are born alive and there are usually about 18 babies in a litter.
