Raccoons live in trees or near ponds and streams in forests. They might also live in a den in a hollow log. They sleep in the day and hunt at night. They hunt for poultry, mice, bird's eggs, insects, fish and frogs. Sometimes they eat nuts and wild fruit. They can swim very well! In the winter, they sleep in a den high in a hollow tree. They don't sleep all winter, but they come out whenever it gets warm. They live to be about 15 years old in zoos, but live for only about 5 years in the wild. People often think that raccoons are cute and cuddly, but raccoons have sharp teeth and claws and will defend themselves if they think they are in danger from animals or people. |
