Porcupines have long pointed spines, or quills, which protect them from other animals. If another animal is attacking them or scaring them, they hit the attacker with their quilled tails. The quills stick and are hard to get out. Porcupines live by themselves. They are very slow moving. They don't see very well, but they are very good at hearing and smelling. They are also good swimmers. They spend much of their time in trees. In the winter, they like to live in evergreen trees and eat the needles. In summer, they roam around in wooded areas. They may make a nest in a hollow log, a cave or a tree. They are herbivores, which mean that they eat plants but not animals. They like to eat the bark of trees, which can kill the tree. |
