Herons make their nests high in the branches of trees or in bushes. They build their nest of loose piles of sticks. They will nest together in a group and do not like to have their nests disturbed. Most eat aquatic animals such as fish, frogs and crayfish, but some eat insects or mice. When they hunt, they often stand for a long time without moving. Then they will suddenly spear their prey with their long bills. The blue heron lives in the Northwest in summer but may go as far south as South America in the winter. |
