Bald eagles live near the ocean or near lakes and streams near oceans. They mostly eat fish, but will also eat rabbits or squirrels. They do not have to eat every day, but they cannot go for very long without food. Bald eagles build their nests in large trees near rivers or coasts. A typical nest is around 5 feet around. They will build their nests on a cliff if there are no trees around. Bald eagles are not really bald, but they have a white head. They have been endangered but are now protected from hunting. Bald eagles have gotten more used to being around people and now nest near towns instead of in the wilderness. When eagles spread out their wings, the distance from one wing tip to the other can be as long as seven feet! |
