Beavers

Beavers live in rivers, streams and fresh water lakes near woodlands. They are strong swimmers and divers. Beavers build lodges which they can enter from underneath the water. The floor of the lodge can be 8 feet wide and 3 feet high. They also build dams, which make ponds around the beaver lodges. Beavers have two large teeth in the front of their mouths that they use to cut down trees for their dams and lodges. They eat water lilly roots, clover, and the leaves and the green bark from trees. Beavers are gentle creatures who get along well with people and with each other. The fur of the beaver is very soft and shiny, so they have been hunted for their fur. Now they are protected in the wild so they are not endangered. |
